Further Information on Economics PhD Programme
The PhD programme in Economics focuses on a strong foundation in quantitative economics, particularly economic theory, but also applied econometrics, and has existing research strengths and specialization in the following areas:
- Environmental and Resource Economics.
- European Economics.
- Industrial Economics.
- Economic Models: General equilibrium models and Business Cycle Models.
- Health Economics
- Labor Economics
- Econometrics
The Department is committed to high quality supervision and research and admits as a consequence only a few PhD students every year. A supervisor is expected to undertake supervision for no more than three PhD students. The Department of Economics has a policy of encouraging PhD students to spend part of their time at leading foreign universities within their chosen specialization, after completing some basic PhD-level courses within the Danish PhD program.
The application areas reflect the research interests of the Department. The research has received good evaluation by peer review, is in close contact with research activities at other universities, and has received external financing for many of its projects.
The PhD Programme
The PhD programme consists of two main elements:
- Coursework at PhD level.
- The research project (PhD dissertation)
The coursework is an essential prerequisite of the programme, is expected to extend over two to three semesters, and contains three types of courses:
1. Introductory courses in economics within the Danish PhD Programme, in which the Department of Economics participates: These include Advanced Microeconomics, Advanced Macroeconomics and Econometrics. These courses are based on textbooks used in many leading universities, such as Mas-Colell-Whinston-Green: Microeconomic Theory 1995, Stokey-Lucas-Prescott: Recursive Methods in Economic Dynamics 1989. These courses can be replaced with other courses of a comparable level.
